VMware Cloud Well-Architected Framework: Automation of Infra, Workload, and Security Services for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

Automation for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

Automating infrastructure operations bring consistency across multiple environments, reduction of human errors, and decreased time spent on day-to-day tasks. Operations on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) can be automated using multiple automation tools.

Organizations can consume Oracle Cloud VMware Solution at a faster rate and accelerate their cloud adoption by leveraging automation of infrastructure and workloads.

The initial deployment of the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC, in addition to other activities such as host addition, can be managed using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure native CLI and REST APIs.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure CLI requires installation of the CLI utility, which is supported on many OS platforms. The commands can then be integrated into any scripting language. For more details on the commands that can be used to manage an Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, please refer to the official Oracle Cloud Infrastructure CLI command reference.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure REST API allows for integration using standard web protocols, HTTP and HTTPS. The APIs can be programmatically called with any programming language or API platform. For more details on the API calls that can be used to manage an Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, please refer to the official Oracle Cloud Infrastructure API reference:

Operations within the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC can be automated by leveraging vCenter and NSX automation tools, such as PowerCLI and APIs. For more information, please refer to the official VMware documentation on vCenter and NSX APIs for the appropriate versions running in your Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC.

To automate the deployment and management of workloads that reside in the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC, organizations can leverage VMware vRealize Automation.

  • To start using vRealize Automation with Oracle Cloud VMware Solution the SDDC’s vCenter and NSX-T cloud accounts must be created within vRealize Automation with appropriate authentication.
  • Then with appropriate vRealize Automation configurations, workloads can be deployed to the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC from VMware vRealize Automation templates.
  • VMware vRealize Automation can also perform day 2 actions to the workloads, such as adding storage or creating snapshots. Security components, such as NSX-T distributed firewall rules and security groups, can be created using VMware vRealize Automation templates as well.
