Tanzu Explainer for VMware Cloud Tech Zone

Overview

This document is intended to help VMware Cloud Tech Zone audiences navigate the Tanzu family by providing short descriptions of each Tanzu product and service, Tanzu Editions and Bundles, and a quick reference of which Tanzu products and services are included in each bundle. This is not a replacement for official Tanzu documentation and messaging, available at tanzu.vmware.com.

VMware Tanzu

Portfolio of products and services targeted at developers and platform operators to help build new application, modernize existing applications, and build modern application platforms

Tanzu Application Service

A modern application platform built on Cloud Foundry allowing enterprises to continuously deliver and run microservices across clouds. Provides the iconic cf push developer experience on a proven enterprise platform.

Tanzu Application Platform

A packaged set of components that helps developers and operators build, deploy, and manage apps on Kubernetes. Simplifies workflows in both the inner loop--developers' development cycle of iterating on code--and the outer loop--how operators deploy apps to production and maintain them over time. Provides a default set of components that automates pushing an app to staging and production on Kubernetes. Operators can customize the platform by replacing TAP components with other products. 

Tanzu Build Service

Develop and automate containerized software workflows securely and at scale. Built on the open-source Cloud Native Buildpacks project. Creates repeatable builds and keeps images up to date. 

VMware Application Catalog (Formerly Tanzu Application Catalog)

A customizable selection of open source software from the Bitnami collection that is continuously maintained and verifiably tested for use in production environments. Pre-packaged container images and Helm charts can be deployed on customer-provided base images and placed into private repositories.  

Tanzu Kubernetes Grid

CNCF-certified, enterprise-ready Kubernetes runtime that streamlines operations across a multi-cloud infrastructure. TKG offers simplified installation, automated multi-cluster operations, integrated platform service, and open source alignment. Includes support for Harbor, Antrea, Calico, NSX Advanced Load Balancer Essentials, Contour, FluentBit, Prometheus, Grafana, and Velero. TKG can be deployed as the integrated vSphere with Tanzu experience using Tanzu Kubernetes Grid with Supervisor Clusters on supported platforms, or Tanzu Kubernetes Grid with Management Clusters.

Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition

Formerly known as Enterprise PKS. Production-grade, highly available container runtime that operates on vSphere and public clouds. Built on Kubernetes, BOSH, Operations Manager, VMware NSX-T, and Harbor.

Tanzu Mission Control

Centralized management platform for consistently operating and securing your Kubernetes infrastructure across multiple teams and clouds. Two versions are available today—Tanzu Mission Control Essentials is bundled with vSphere+, VMware Cloud Foundation, and VMware Cloud with Tanzu Services, and Tanzu Mission Control Advanced is available on its own or as part of Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations.

Aria Operations for Applications (formerly Tanzu Observability)

High-performance streaming analytics platform supporting enterprise-grade observability and analytics at scale. Monitor everything from full stack applications to cloud infrastructures with metrics, traces, counters, event logs, and analytics. 

Tanzu Service Mesh

Enterprise-class service mesh solution that provides reliable control and security for microservices, end users, and data across all your clusters and clouds in the most demanding multi-cluster and multi-cloud environments. 

Tanzu Labs

Professional services organization that partners with you to build apps, modernize apps, build platforms, and transform data. 

VMware Tanzu Bundles 

Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations

Bundle of Tanzu products targeted to meet the needs of on-premises and cloud infrastructure teams. Available in the following packages:

• Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations Foundation includes Tanzu Mission Control Advanced and Tanzu Service Mesh Advanced. Two add-on SKUs are available—one adds Antrea Advanced and Aria Operations for Applications, the other adds these plus NSX Advanced Load Balancer Enterprise. Tanzu Kubernetes Grid is not included in this bundle.
• Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations includes Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, Tanzu Mission Control Advanced, Tanzu Service Mesh Advanced, Antrea Advanced, and Aria Operations for Applications.
• Tanzu for Kubernetes Operations with NSX Advanced Load Balancer includes Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, Tanzu Mission Control Advanced, Tanzu Service Mesh Advanced, Antrea Advanced, Aria Operations for Applications, and NSX Advanced Load Balancer Enterprise.

VMware Cloud with Tanzu services

Automatic entitlement to Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and Tanzu Mission Control Essentials for VMware Cloud on AWS customers, with configuration exposed through the VMware Cloud console.

vSphere Editions and Tanzu Entitlements 

vSphere+ Standard

vSphere+ Standard does not include any Tanzu Entitlements.

vSphere 8 Enterprise Plus with Tanzu Kubernetes Grid

vSphere 8 Enterprise Plus with Tanzu Kubernetes Grid includes entitlement for Tanzu Kubernetes Grid. This allows deploying the integrated vSphere with Tanzu experience using Tanzu Kubernetes Grid with Supervisor Clusters or Tanzu Kubernetes Grid with Management Clusters.

vSphere+

vSphere+ includes the same Tanzu Kubernetes Grid entitlement as vSphere 8 Enterprise Plus with Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and adds Tanzu Mission Control Essentials.

VMware Tanzu Products on VMware Cloud Platforms

VMware Cloud Foundation includes an entitlement to Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and Tanzu Mission Control Essentials.

VMware Cloud on AWS includes an entitlement to VMware Cloud with Tanzu services, which includes Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and Tanzu Mission Control Essentials.

There is no Tanzu entitlement included for Azure VMware Solution, Google Cloud VMware Engine, or Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. Tanzu Kubernetes Grid is available for these platforms as an add-on, per-core SKU.

VMware Tanzu Entitlements by Bundle, Edition, or Platform

The following table lists Tanzu products and services and identifies which Tanzu bundle, vSphere edition, or VMware Cloud platform each is included in. Individual products and services are available separately or as add-ons to a bundle.
