Introducing Self-Service VPC Peering for VMware Cloud on AWS

Streamlining network connectivity to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and enabling customers to manage peering independently.

Introduction

We are excited to announce a significant milestone in simplifying storage network connectivity for our valued VMware Cloud on AWS customers: the launch of our new self-service VPC Peering feature.

This enhancement is set to redefine the way you connect to external NFS storage, offering a much more simplified path to establishing storage network connectivity.

Until now, establishing a VPC Peering connection between VMware Cloud on AWS and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP involved a multi-step process which could only be triggered by the customer contacting their VMware Customer Success or Account representatives, followed by direct coordination with VMware. This process added unnecessary time delays in enabling network connectivity and achieving storage decoupling.

With this launch, we’re excited to remove these hurdles and further streamline your experience with a more efficient VPC Peering process. The self-service VPC Peering feature, accessible from within the VMware Cloud on AWS Console UI, empowers you to take further control of your storage networking. You can independently create, view, and delete VPC Peering connections from within the Storage tab of the SDDC.

Key Benefits

Streamlined Connectivity: Quickly establish a direct peering connection between your VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP.

Empowered Control: With the self-service feature, you have the flexibility to manage your connectivity settings directly, reducing dependency on external processes.

Cost Efficiency: Continue to enjoy no data transfer charges, lowering your overall operational costs for single-AZ deployments.

Self-Service UI

You can access the new feature by selecting the desired SDDC and navigating to the storage tab. Here, the VPC Peering page will allow you to initiate and manage peering connections with ease.

Request VPC Peering

To begin, select CREATE PEERING CONNECTION and enter the AWS Account ID and VPC ID of your Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP file system in the prompt message that appears. You can then proceed with the remaining configurations through the AWS console, following the steps outlined in the VMware Cloud on AWS Integration with Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP Deployment Guide.
